History: Its history goes back to the Vedic Age. To great epics, the Ramayan and the Mahabharta were born and flourished here. Two great religions–Jainism and Buddhism flourished here. In the medieval age, great Muslim kingdoms were established here. It was the epicenter of the Revolt of 1857. The British initially called it the united provinces of Agra and Ayodhya. In 1935 the names were shortened to ‘‘United provinces.’’ After Independence, the states of Rampur, Banaras and Tehri-Garhwal were merged with the united provinces. The name was changed to Uttar Pradesh in 1950. The Western and North-Western area was carved out as a new state a November 9, 2000, called Uttarakhand.
