Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7th May 1861 in a rich and cultured family at Jorasanko in Calcutta. Devendranath Tagore was his father and Shardadevi was his mother. He was the 14th child of his parents. At the age of eleven, he started writing beautiful verses. He had a good quality to describe any event with clarity. This was known by his headmaster of the school. He went to England to study but he returned from there without completing the studies. He was mainly interested in two things the human relationship and the motherland.



Rabindranath Tagore was a painter, patriot, poet, playwright, novelist, story-teller, philosopher and educationist as well as a great human. He was against divisions, boundaries and discrimination on the basis of territory, geography, race etc. He believed in the unity of life and its expression.

Rabindranath Tagore spread universal love and harmony through his works and life. He was great for his country. He had said, “my country that is forever India, the country of my forefathers, the country of my children, my country has given me life and strength.” And again, “I shall be born in India again.



Rabindranath Tagore was first India to win Nobel Prize. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on 13th November 1913. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for “his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse”. It was a moment of great pride and honour for all the Indians. Geetanjali was published in 1910. He also composed puravi, the evening songs and the morning songs. He wrote on many subjects-social, political, cultural, religious, moral etc.



Rabindranath Tagore was also knowns as the Bard of Bengal and Gurudev. He was one of the greatest literary figures in India. He composed the national anthems of India and Bangladesh and the national anthem of Sri Lanka. His songs, poetry, novels and essays are now cult classics. He wrote Manasi in 1890. Manasi was a collection of social and poetical poems stamped with the mark of his early genius and art. Most of his work belongs to life, land and the people of Bengal. The collection of Tagore’s stories entitled Galpaguccha portrays the poverty, illiteracy and backwardness of the people so well and effectively.

Rabindranath Tagore is considered the greatest figure in the modern Indian Renaissance. He was a source of beauty and knowledge and an inspiration for all noble thought and great ideas. Misfornunately, he is not with us but his ideas will inspire and encourage us continuously.
