Kashinath Trimbak Telang was born in a Marathi Brahmin family in 1850 AD. He
received his early education in a Marathi school. He completed his M.A. and
L.L.B. from the prestigious Elphinstone College. In a very short span of time, K.T. Telang established himself as a prominent lawyer in Bombay. Later, he became
a judge in the Bombay High Court in 1889. His Deep knowledge of ancient Hindu
scriptures and great command over Sanskrit along with English made him a big
name in Hindu laws.
He was one of the founding members of the Indian National Congress (INC). He
became the first secretary of INC. He was also a social reformer and he strongly
advocated women’s education and the upliftment of the depressed classes. He was
a prominent leader of the moderate group of the INC. He passed away in 1893 AD.
● K.T. Telang became the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bombay in 1892 and
remained on this post till his death.
● He translated Lessing’s ‘Nathan the Wise’ into Marathi. He also translated the
Bhagavadgita into English.
● He was elected the President of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society
in 1892 AD.
● K.T. Telang was a prominent member of the Bombay Triumvirate. Pherozeshah
Mehta and Badruddin Tyabji were the other members of the Triumvirate.
● Telang, Mehta and Tyabji founded the Bombay Presidency Association in 1885 AD.
