Rash Behari Ghosh
, a luminary figure of the Indian National Movement, was born on December 23, 1845 in Burdwan, Bengal. After attaining early education from the Burdwan Raj Collegiate School, he joined the Presidency College, Calcutta (now Kolkata). He cleared M.A. in English with first class. In 1884, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws. Soon he started his career as a lawyer in the Calcutta High Court.



He was ideologically very influenced by G.K. Gokhale and the moderate policies of the Indian National Congress. During Swadeshi Movement, he lent his support to the national education idea. He also remained the President of the National Council of Education from 1906 to 1921 AD. He became a member of the Bengal Legislative Council two times between 1891 to 1894 and 1906 to 1909. He was also a member of the Secretary of State’s Council of India.

Rash Behari Ghosh was a leader of moderate policies in the INC and supporter of Gokhale’s political ideology in the Indian freedom struggle. He never supported any kind of extremism and aggression in the INC policies. He became the President of the Indian National Congress in 1907 AD at its Surat session and then the historic Surat split between the moderate and the extremist leaders in the INC took place.

► He again became the INC President at its Madras session next year. In brief he was one of those prominent leaders who actually shaped the Indian National Movement in its early stage. He passed away in 1921AD. Rash Behari Ghosh was accorded the honour of the Knighthood in 1915.

► He was also awarded the Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1896 and the Companion of the Order of the Star of India in 1909 by the British Government.

► Rash Behari Ghosh and Rash Behari Bose, both are two great leaders of the Indian Freedom Struggle. Sometimes they are mistakenly taken as the same leader but actually they are two different leaders. Rash Behari Ghosh was a moderate leader of the INC and the President of it in its historic Surat session in 1907 AD while Rash Behari Bose was a revolutionary leader and pivotal force in the formation of the Indian National Army (INA).
