A Visit to a Historical Place Essay

There are many famous ancient temples and historical buildings in India. The Taj Mahal is also one of them. Last time I visited The Mahal. It is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and some Western historians have noted that it’s architectural beauty has never been surpassed.



The Taj is situated at Agra in Uttar Pradesh in India. The Taj is one of the most famous historical buildings in India. It is known all over the world as a dream in marble. It was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan was the famous Mughal emperor. When Mumtaz Mahal was still alive, she extracted four promises from the emperor:  first, that he build the Taj Mahal; second: he should marry again; third: he should be kind to their children; and fourth: he visits the tomb on her death anniversary.

The construction started in 1631.  The expert craftsman from Delhi, Qannauj, Lahore and Multan were employed. They build this monument over a period of twenty-two years, with the employment of 20,000 workers.  The total amount spent on the beautiful and sacred monument was 32 million rupees. After the completion of this building, the emperor Shah Jahan got to cut both hands of the builder so that he could not build the pair of the Taj.



Since the last four centuries, the popularity of the Taj has not dimmed the least. It still commands the first position among the popular buildings of the world. Its architectural beauty is beyond sufficient description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon.  On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj Mahal as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna River.



It is situated outside the city of Agra on the banks of a river, Yamuna. In order to reach the main building, we have to pass through a huge gateway of red stones. The Taj is built on a raised platform. The marble tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are situated in the middle of the main building. They are inlaid with costly stones, on the walls of the building are carved verses from the Holy Koran.

As soon as people reach close to the building, they forget the world. The grave looks like a fairy dressed in a spotless white dress. On a moonlit night, the beauty of Taj penetrates the interstices of mind so as to remain there forever. We really feel that we have never seen such an attractive building before. Tagore said about the Taj that “The Taj is a tear frozen on the cheek of eternity”.

The Taj Mahal is an immortal building. It is called beauty concretized in pure white marble and joys forever. As a tribute to a beautiful woman and as a monument for durable love, the Taj Mahal shows its subtleties If we visit it without being in a hurry. At last I will advise you to visit the Taj Mahal at least once in your life. You will enjoy it very much.
