List of Bharat Ratna Awardees :
'Bharat Ratna', given for national service, is India's highest civilian honor. These services include arts, literature, science, public service and sports. This honor was established by the then President of India, Shri Rajendra Prasad on 2 January 1954. The design of this medal is written in the Bharat Ratna Devanagari script along with the sun shining on the leaves of a peepal.

So far, 48 persons from various fields have been honored with respect to Bharat Ratna. In 1954, the first Bharat Ratna was honored by the second President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
