Note : U.S., unique, Euroean, useful तथा university/ य/ध्वनि से शुरू होते हैं जो consonant sound हैं। अत: इनके पहले a का प्रयोग होता है।
Incorrect :
My boots were in a good condition. Correct :
My books were in bad state. Correct :
Note : In good/bad condition को idiom माना जाता है तथा इसके साथ a नहीं लगाया जाता है। किन्तु in a good/bad state कहा जाता है।
Incorrect :
He is in a good health. Correct :
I have a homework to do. Correct :
The accused asked for a mercy. Correct :
I have received a news from abroad. Correct :
He gets a good pay. Correct :

Note : Health, homework, mercy, news, pay, safety, soap, travel, weather, work, paper (कागज)– uncountable noun हैं, इनके पहले a नहीं लगाया जाता। किन्तु salary journey, climate तथा paper (= newspaper) countable nouns हैं, इनके पहले a लगता है।

Note : Answer boat, holiday, horse, lesson, morning, politician, rest तथा city singular countable nouns हैं, इनके पहले a/an का प्रयोग किया जाता है। लेकिन by boat/car/train/bus/plane इत्यादि idiom हैं, इनके साथ a नहीं लगाया जाता।

Note : अगर किसी noun से definite वस्तु का बोध हो तो उसके पहले the लगाया जाता है।

Note : Play, learn तथा like verbs के बाद अगर कोई musical instrument का नाम हो तो उस musical instrument के पहले the लगाया जाता है।

Note : Superlative degree of adjective (= best, smallest, biggest आदि) के पहले the का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Note : कुछ adjectives हैं जिनके पहले सदा the का प्रयोग किया जाता है, उनमें कुछ मुख्य हैं–
the blind, the deaf, the sick, the mentally ill, the poor, the old, the dead, the rich, the unemployed, the handicapped.
इन शब्दों का plural meaning होता है, जैसे– the dead = the dead people या all dead people.

Note : Mankind, nature, society तथा man का प्रयोग general अर्थ में हुआ है, तथा इनके पहले article नहीं लगाया जाता।

Note : अगर most या most of के ठीक बाद कोई noun आए तो most के पहले the नहीं लगाया जाता।
