Note : (i) ’s का प्रयोग प्राय: सजीव के साथ होता है। जैसे–

a women’s college

a men’s lavatory
a child’s toy
my mother’s headache
mother’s hat

(ii) किन्तु ’s का प्रयोग निर्जीव वस्तुओं के साथ खासकर time, distance तथा money से संबंधित expressions के साथ होता है–

a fortnight’s holyday
the sun’s ray
yesterday’s paper
an hour’s delay
ten minutes’ walk
the government’s decision
at my wit’s end for God’s sake
for goodness’ sake
a stone’s throw
a ship’s doctor
today’s news
a night’s sleep
the train’s arrival
the volcano’s eruption
at his fingers’ ends this year’s sale
a day’s work
a rupee’s worth
in his mind’s eye

Incorrect :
Adam’s and Eve’s children. Correct :
Shakespeare and Tennyson’s poetry. Correct :

The old’s sufferings cannot be fully described. Correct :
Note : कुछ adjectives हैं जिनका प्रयोग nouns की तरह व्यक्ति का बोध कराने के लिए होता हैं किन्तु उनमें ’s लगाकर possessive नहीं बनाया जाता।

Incorrect :
Six B.A.s are there. Correct :
Four M.A.s applied for the post. Correct :
Add two 4s and three 2s to this figure. Correct :
Note : Letters तथा arithmetical figures में Traditional grammarians के अनुसार ’s लगाकर उनका plural बनाया जाता है। किन्तु modern grammarians इससे सहमत नहीं हैं।

Incorrect :
I am fond of Keat’s poems. Correct :
Do you like Yeat’s poems ? Correct :
Note : Singular proper nouns जिनके अन्त में s रहे उनमें या तो ’s जोड़ा जाता है या केवल ’ –
Keats’s poems या Keats’ poems; Dickens’s novels या Dickens’ novels; Hercules’s labour या Hercules’ labour; Burns’s poems या Burns’ poems; Jones’s car या Jones’ car.
याद रखें : एक वाक्य में कई बार ’s के प्रयोग से वाक्य भद्दा तथा अर्थ अस्पष्ट हो जाता है, जैसे–
I am god-father’s nephew’s Headmaster’s secretary.
ऐसा वाक्य लिखने से अच्छा है of का प्रयोग करना ताकि अर्थ स्पष्ट हो सके।
